New England has a long history of leading revolutions, thriftiness and wisdom born from common sense. It is with these qualities that Smart Technology Management was founded.

Revolution “Every generation needs a new revolution.” Thomas Jefferson

As our global economy grows, so do our environmental concerns. It's one thing to talk about change but what about making a positive, global impact right now? The EPA estimates that 70% of all heavy metals in landfills comes from discarded electronics but electronic waste represents less than 3% of the trash in our landfills. In 2005 outdated electronics totaled 2 million tons!

The most lethal substances in electronics are: lead, mercury, cadmium and brominated flame retardants. Lead is used in PC cathode ray tubes (CRT’s), solder and interconnects. Mercury is used in bulbs to light flat panel computer monitors and notebooks. Brominated flame retardants are used in plastic cases and cables as fire retardancy and cadmium was used in nickel cadmium rechargeable batteries for laptops and other portables.

Besides sitting in American landfills poisoning our land and water, some “recyclers” prefer to ship our problems overseas to developing countries like South Korea, China, Taiwan and some African countries. Once there, "cheap labor" in the form of impoverished men, women and children along with low environmental and labor standards lead to pollution and health problems as they recover the raw materials. Sometimes the process is as simple as throwing the equipment on a fire and burning off unwanted plastics and metals. Here in the States, removing harmful metals from electronics or “demanufacturing” takes time and money. To us, it seems to be a fair trade and we insist on demanufacturing all equipment that cannot be remarketed. It’s also the right thing to do.

Thriftiness “It is thrifty to prepare today for the wants of tomorrow.” Aesop quotes

There are valuable resources used in electronic products like precious metals, copper, plastics, and glass. Rather than mining, reusing / recycling these materials conserves natural resources and avoids air pollution, water pollution and cuts down greenhouse gas emissions created when manufacturing new products.

Our Remarketing Team has a stellar track record for re-use of electronics to other individuals and companies. We can often offer a percentage of the revenue received for the resale of your items that are tested and evaluated as Grade A. Many of our competitors promise revenue share but we deliver!

Common Sense “Common sense is the knack of seeing things as they are and doing things as they ought to be done.” Harriet Beecher Stowe

We strictly adhere to the EPA’s Guidelines for Material Management:

  • Maximize reuse, refurbishment, and recycling over disposal and incineration
  • Take precautions to reduce emissions and exposures to workers and the environment;
  • Provide special handling of components which may contain substances of concern;
  • Ensure that exported electronic products are being sent for legitimate reuse, recycling or refurbishment;
  • Ensure that downstream recycling, refurbishing and disposal facilities follow management practices that are consistent with the guidelines

Our Mission:
To ensure the protection of our employees, customers and individual security regarding personal data stored on IT equipment and adhere to the principles that protect Environment from toxic waste.

STM is an employee-owned company of dedicated individuals who have a passion, personal and financial stake in what they do. We are not part of a large corporation, franchise or branch office where you are an “order number” and get lost in the shuffle. We are committed to our customers and the preservation of our environment.
